What is a YouTube Topic Channel?
A Topic Channel is automatically created by YouTube when your music is distributed. It usually looks like: Artist Name – Topic
🔑 How to claim it (get an Official Artist Channel)
To claim your Topic Channel, you’re actually requesting an Official Artist Channel (OAC), which merges your Topic Channel with your main YouTube channel.
Step-by-step
- Make sure you have a personal YouTube channel
- This should be the channel you actively use
- Must have at least one uploaded video
- Find your Topic Channel
- Search your artist name on YouTube
- Look for: “Artist Name – Topic”
- Send a request to EngineEars support
Include:- Your Topic Channel URL
- Your personal YouTube channel URL
- The UPC of a release you distributed through EngineEars that’s live on YouTube
- Wait for processing
- EngineEars submits the request to YouTube
- Usually takes a few days to a couple weeks
🎯 What you get after approval
Once approved, your channels are merged into an Official Artist Channel, which gives you:
- All music + videos in one place
- “Music” tab on your channel
- Verified artist status
- Better control over your catalog on YouTube
YouTube Shorts & Copyright Claims
If your video is being denied on YouTube Shorts, it’s most likely due to how copyrighted audio is used on the platform.
Here’s what to know:
- Copyrighted music delivered through distribution (like EngineEars) is only eligible for use in Shorts that are 60 seconds or less
- If your Short exceeds 60 seconds using that audio, it may be blocked or denied
- This applies even if the music is your own and properly distributed
Important:
- If we remove the Content ID claim on our end, the video may go live, but you will not be able to monetize it
- The claim is what allows your audio to be tracked and monetized on YouTube
Recommended Solution:
- Trim your video to 60 seconds or less
- Re-upload the Short using the same audio
This ensures your content stays live and remains eligible for monetization.
⚠️ Important notes
- You can’t claim a Topic Channel yourself through YouTube
- It must be done through your distributor (like EngineEars)
- Your release must already be live on YouTube via distribution
- Channels can’t be fully allowlisted, but specific videos can be if needed
